Discoveries Part II
Zach I played two characters in our adaptation: Polonius and Marcellus. Of the two, I saw much more of a shift in Polonius from the original play to the adaptation. This is likely due to the fact that Polonius actually contributes readily to discussion and is more distinct of a role. As for how they each came to life, I have to credit my scene partners and director with the bulk of that. The people you play across from and off of are the ones who define your character. With both of my characters, I examined the original text to determine how my characters would react, and used the findings in the recordings we created.

Harlan In Hamlet, Francisco is one of the guards of Elsinore castle. In our adaptation, he is a night guard for Elsinore Co. Instead of wearing armor and carrying a sword like he does normally, Francisco wears a jumpsuit and officer hat. In the first scene he passes off his shift to Barnado so that he can sleep. Playing Francisco brought more light to Hamlet for me personally by illuminating the importance of the security officers and their relationship to the audience, as well as their relationship to the rest of the play. Although the guards are not the most prominent characters in the play, they have an important role in the exposition of the play, revealing background and introducing new ideas.
